Stage 1: Technical Phase

Purpose

 

The start of the institutional program is characterized by the mobilization of the education community towards a need for change. At the end of the VESS 1 training, the team will have determined their essential agreements in order to begin the implementation process at their institution.

 

Stage 1: Technical Phase

Objectives:

 

To mobilize the education community towards a cultural change.

 

To introduce the VESS Model by training the teachers and supporting them through online tutoring.

 

To know and use the thinking strategies.

 

To practice the acquired knowledge and demonstrate basic skills.

 

To provide and use valuable resources to support institutional change.

 

To raise awareness and to begin the changes in the classroom regarding the handling of language, routines and structures, and the environment.

 

To begin the transformation of the teachers’ role.

Diagnostics Report.

 

Purpose:

 

VESS I on-site mentoring coaching, intended to guarantee the VESS Model implementation rhythm. This coaching seeks to observe the progress regarding the elements discussed in the VESS I training, and thus is an opportunity for growth. The teachers are accompanied in the classrooms, and then they will have feedback from their mentor-coach.

Stage 2: Discovering Goals

Objectives:

 

To discover, by taking action, the three different types of objectives that a teacher must keep in mind.

 

To show the changes in the three cultural forces.

 

To begin the internal coaching process, and reflect when taking action.

 

To strengthen self-confidence as an aspect of the learning content.

Year 2

Stage 3: Strategic Phase

Purpose

 

This stage seeks to develop a deeper understanding of the process of building a VESS Culture of Thinking, by using strategies and activities in order to have a clear purpose. At the same time, it allows all members of the educational institution to recognize and promote the elements that are the base of the VESS Culture of Thinking: Cultural Forces, Habits of Mind, and the documentation of the learning stories.

Stage 3: Strategic Phase

Objectives:

 

To recognize different characteristics of the current institutional culture, in order to determine strengths and align the resources and work areas.

 

To identify the conditions that will move the current academic approach towards the VESS Culture of Thinking.

 

To move from the concept of “Visible Thinking” towards the VESS concept of synergistic integration of multiple strategies and concepts.

 

To recognize the whole as well as the different parts of the strategies, and the foundations needed to build a VESS Culture of Thinking.

 

To recognize the elements and processes of thinking that allow the construction of a sustainable Culture of Thinking over time.

 

To have an initial understanding of how the VESS strategies and processes are integrated in different ways in the curricular and leadership areas, in order to change educational practices in both the classroom and the institution.

 

Stage 4: Consolidation Phase

Purpose

 

The VESS 2 face-to-face coaching encourages the teachers to transcend the use of the strategies that promote thinking with a purpose or objective. The teachers are expected to be fully conversant with the elements that are part of a Culture of Thinking, such as the Cultural Forces, Habits of Mind, and the use of documentation to record learning stories.

Stage 4: Consolidation Phase

Objectives:

 

To demonstrate a greater depth in the construction of a Culture of Thinking.

Stage 5: Insight Phase

Purpose

 

The VESS 3 training promotes reflection as an educational, teaching and leadership practice. It also provides the tools needed to discover complexity, to reflect using strategic thinking in order to solve conflicts, to make decisions, to communicate, to manage, and to self-assess the pedagogical practices and the institution.

Stage 5: Insight Phase

Objectives:

 

To promote reflection before action with a theoretical base

 

To learn of and experience knowledge and strategies for deep reflection processes

 

To discover levels of complexity in the VESS Culture of Thinking.

 

To foster deep professional reflection about teaching and learning practices, institutional policies, and other processes that impact the attainment of a VESS Culture of Thinking

 

To promote the creation of effective strategies to consolidate an institutional Culture of Thinking

Purpose

 

This phase consists on the demonstration at intermediate and advanced levels of principles and strategic skills considered in the VESS Model. Face-to-face coaching, has the objective of verifying the existence of a process that allows the Culture of Thinking become more solid, characterized by deep reflection processes.

Purpose

 

This phase is the consolidation of the VESS Model and the VESS Culture of Thinking implementation. We seek the management of skills in an autonomous way and institutional independence so that the institutional change is sustainable.

 

In addition, the use of thinking strategies and emotional intelligence and/or mindfulness, and Thinking as a Pedagogical Strategy highlight the pursuit of the VESS Model’s principles, as established in the VESS Disc, a reflective practice; and it motivates the transformation of assessment models.

Stage 7: Sustainability Phase

Objectives:

 

To show evidence of the use of emotional intelligence and/or mindfulness tools as a comprehensive part of educational work

 

To experience intrinsic motivation factors in the educational community

 

To consolidate the VESS Culture of Thinking in institutions

 

To guarantee the sustainability of the VESS Culture of Thinking through the creation of clear performance and progress measures

 

To lead changes in the way of evaluating the students’ progress, and thus measuring the learning process

Purpose

 

The objective of the VESS 5 training is to develop evaluation mechanisms for the development and learning processes of a student, the teaching practices and, the pedagogical and institutional processes. Guaranteeing measurement mechanisms that provide continuous improvement and identifying moments of reflection that lead to learning and to action.

 

Stage 7: Sustainability Phase

Objectives:

 

To show evidence of the use of emotional intelligence and/or mindfulness tools as a comprehensive part of educational work

 

To experience intrinsic motivation factors in the educational community

 

To consolidate the VESS Culture of Thinking in the institutions

 

To guarantee the sustainability of the VESS Culture of Thinking through the creation of clear performance and progress measures

Purpose

 

Stage 8 is the time of institutional evaluation regarding the achievement of change towards a Culture of Thinking, and the projection towards a process of continuous improvement. At this stage, the institution is part of the Edu1st VESS Accreditation Process, seeking institutional accreditation as well as the recognition of achievements and opportunities to create a sustainable culture and build the projection of the institution towards the future.

Stage 8: Self-Assessment Phase

Objectives:

 

To guarantee quality standards with which a VESS Culture of Thinking identifies with

 

To carry out a self-assessment process characterized by deep reflection and the recognition of institutional achievements and future opportunities

 

To obtain international recognition for its culture and for always being at the forefront of educational innovation

 

To be part of the accredited VESS School Network, acquiring benefits in training, consultation, etc. Being part of educational innovation, and a support network
